Whitchurch Nursery

We extended our high quality care to the North of Cardiff in November 2003 providing Welsh language care for the local communities. The building is larger than Canton and is registered to care for 42 children between the ages of 6 months - 4 yrs, but we have managed to maintain the homely environment we are so well know for.

Theresa Kane manages this branch with a team of caring and professional staff. She moved to Cardiff from Pwllheli following the completion of her BTEC National Diploma in Nursery Nursing and then commenced work for Si-lwli. After 8 years of working in Si-lwli Canton and recently completing the ADCE in Early Childhood Studies and Education she was ready to broaden her experience and accepted a post in Whitchurch as a Manager.

The children refer to the staff as Aunty, which emphasises our homely and friendly environment. The children are split between two floors, we care for 12 children aged between 6 months-2yrs upstairs and downstairs we care for 30 children between the ages of 2-4yrs. The children will move downstairs when there is room or when they are developmentally ready. Within each area the children are then placed into smaller groups depending on their age and development.

We offer a wide spectrum of services and sessions to cater for the ever changing childcare and family demands. Our aim is also to be as flexible as we can to provide you with the best service.

We offer wrap around care to coincide with our local school runs. The School Runs are a unique service for parents who wish their children to attend nursery school session. We currently provide this service for Ysgol Y Wern and Melyn Gruffydd.

Child care Cardiff

We offer two and a half hour sessions in the morning or afternoon for children older than 2yrs who would have fun, playing with new friends whilst learning the Welsh language. It would also be a vital time for you as parents to have some free time to catch up with the shopping or Sleep!!

We are closed during the Christmas week, which will not be charged for, and bank holidays. As a good practice initiative we close the nursery for 3 days per year to allow in house staff training. Parents/carers will be given a minimum of 2 months notice for these dates, and fees for the days will be fully reimbursed

Christmas ’08………Closed from 4:00pm on Wednesday the 24^th of December until the 2^ndof January.

I hope everyone had a lovely summer and is ready for a new term, the older children have all left to go to school and a number of children have moved downstairs. There is a poster on the door showing your children’s groups and the staff would be more than happy to help if you have any questions about key workers and so on. Parents evenings will be arrange during the year.

There are a few staff changes for the new term, aunty Joelyn has joined the team she has a level 2 qualification and experience of working in a nursery, she started working upstairs but has now moved downstairs to gain experience with the older children, Joelyn will be working along side Aunty Glesni with the younger half of the children. Aunty Glesni is also new to the team she has a level 3 qualification and experience in nurseries, she is originally from Machynlleth.

By mid September Rhiannon Bianci will also be starting at Si-lwli working upstairs with the babies, she has a lot of experience with children and is keen to do a qualification as soon as she settles.

Aunty Helen has come back to work after being on maternity leave she is working part time downstairs and Aunty Hayley will also be coming back from her maternity leave to work part time upstairs in November. Aunty Dawn has now moved to the Canton nursery to gain new experiences.

We would like to say a big thank you to Aunty Fflur and Aunty Caryl for their help over the summer, they will be returning to university to finish their degrees; however Aunty Caryl will still be working part time for us when she is available. Aunty Betsan and Aunty Antonia will also be helping us on a part time basis during the term; Betsan is a free lance make-up artist for TV shows but has an interest in working with children. Antonia is currently studying for a CACHE level 3 diploma and is helping us part time to gain experience.

I would like to say big congratulations to Aunty Nia and her very happy news that she is pregnant, Nia will be going on her maternity leave after Christmas and Theresa will be back from her leave in January.

We have arranged a staff training day for Thursday the 30^th of October, the staff will be getting first aid training to update their certificates. This will mean that the nursery will be closed on this day and you will not be charged if your child usually attends on a Thursday.

CSSIW have visited the nursery and have sent us their report on our practice, if you would like to read the report it is available at www.CSSIW.wales.gov.uk, but if you would like us to make you a copy don’t hesitate to ask a staff member.

Christmas day lands on a Thursday this year, this means that we will close at 4:00pm on Wednesday the 24^th (Christmas Eve) until Thursday the 1^st of January. This means that the nursery will only be open one day that week, we are hoping to close on Friday the 2^nd as well, but we would like to ask parents first to ensure that this isn’t going to be a problem. There will be a table on the door, could you please note on this table weather this will be a problem for you.

The operational plan is currently being updated and will be on the notice board for you to read a copy of the quality assurance report will also be available.

Aunty Laura and Aunty Bethan will hold a parents morning on Saturday the 4^th of October this will be an opportunity to have a chat with your children’s key workers and learn more about the foundation phase.
