Illness & First Aid Policy

Please familiarise yourselves with the “Exclusion procedure for illness and communicable disease”. These are the minimum periods of exclusion and should be adhered to.

Staff care for the holistic needs of all the children that attend Si-lwli therefore the Senior staff may contact parents if the child becomes unwell or displays worrying symptoms. In the case of a serious accident or illness occurring the parents will be asked to collect their child immediately. In the unlikely event of the carer parent not being available the emergency contact persons will be contacted. If the injury needs immediate medical attention the paramedics will be contacted and a member of staff will accompany the child. All accidents are recorded in the accident book. A list of qualified first aiders is available on our Health and Safety board near the back door.

Staff must be convinced that the child has returned to good health before re-admitting him/her.

All parents will be informed of any communicable diseases experienced by any children at the nursery.

If any child has a chronic condition and needs special care, treatment or medication it is important the manager is informed to complete any further information forms.

Medication

Staff may only administer prescribed medicine, which is labelled with details of the child’s name, dose of medication and administration technique. We are happy to administer Paracetamol (calpol) for up to two consecutive doses without prescription but beyond that we recommend you seek medical advice. We do not keep paracetamol as stock in the nursery.

If a child has been prescribed antibiotics they must be at home for the first 24hours, which is the equivalent of three doses.

When the medication is brought into the nursery a “Medicine record sheet” must be completed. The parent/carer will need to note the time of the last dose given and sign the form. Two members of staff will witness the medication being administered and sign the form.

At the end of the day the parent/carer must sign that they have received the medication.
